Union Dues
Union dues are the amount we pay each month to be a member of NBNU. Membership gives us protection—on shift and throughout our careers. It connects us to a province-wide network of activists who defend our rights. The Union is a safe space where we can speak out against unfair treatment in the system.
If you are hired as a full-time, part-time, temporary or casual employee under the Nurses Part III Collective Agreement, Nursing Home Collective Agreement or Nurse Managers/Supervisors Collective Agreement, you automatically start paying union dues from your first day of employment. Dues are currently $67.91 and are deducted once a month from each member’s pay.
Benefits of membership
Your union dues help provide the following services:
- Negotiating and enforcing collective agreements.
- Member representation at Nurses Association of New Brunswick and Association of New Brunswick Licensed Practical Nurses disciplinary hearings.
- Supporting injured and disabled nurses and providing assistance with employment issues.
- Providing union education opportunities.
- Researching matters relating to the union.
- Providing a legal assistance plan for members.
- Advocating for quality healthcare in New Brunswick.
- Maintaining NBNU’s membership in CFNU, NBFL and CLC.
- Building relationships with other unions and nursing organizations.
How dues are determined
A formula was put in place effective January 2005 that dues will be calculated at 1.025% of an RNCA Step G annual salary. Dues were frozen using that formula under the January 1, 2011 rate. In January 2025 they were increased at the Step G salary from January 1, 2020.
Each year, when the finance committee meets and creates the annual budget, they may recommend a dues increase. Any increase must then be brought to the floor of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be voted on by the voting delegates present.
At the most recent AGM in 2025, the voting delegates approved a dues increase to $72.39 effective January 1st, 2026, using the formula and the RNCA Step G annual salary amount of January 2021.
Dues reimbursements
NBNU shall reimburse members who pay dues to two or more separate employers in the same month. The reimbursement equals the monthly dues minus the local rebate ($5). NBNU will calculate the refund based on dues collected in the previous calendar year and issues a payment to the members by March 31 of the following year.
