NBNU concludes its 50th Annual General Meeting, reaffirms its commitment to New Brunswick’s public health care system
FREDERICTON – Over 200 nurses and guests from across Canada reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening New Brunswick’s public health care system at NBNU’s 50th Annual General Meeting.
“I was excited to welcome over 200 nurses, fellow labour activists from the Canadian Labour Congress and the Canadian Federation of Nursing Unions, nursing union leaders from across Canada, and NBNU’s past presidents and executive directors to celebrate our 50th AGM,” said Paula Doucet, NBNU President. “This week was an important milestone for us to reflect on the accomplishments of the past 50 years and focus our vision for nurses for the future.”
The AGM took place at the Delta Fredericton, over three and a half days, and was focused on strengthening solidarity among nurses. It began with dedicated sessions for nurse practitioners, licensed practical nurses and NBNU’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee to establish their priorities for the coming year. The meeting also included business sessions focused on nursing priorities for healing New Brunswick’s broken public health care system.
Key resolutions reached during the meeting included :
- The commitment to reinforce NBNU’s efforts to have government halt the use of expensive private, for-profit nursing agencies and invest in the public health care system
- The commitment to advocate for increased hours of care in the long-term care sector to meet the national standard, ensuring residents receive the high quality of care and support they deserve
Attendees also watched the results of the provincial election on October 21st unfold with interest.
“We at NBNU would like to congratulate Susan Holt and the Liberal Party on their election victory,” says Doucet. “We look forward to working with them, to bolster transparency and accountability in doing the important work of restoring the strength of New Brunswick’s public health care system.”
Other business arising from this year’s Annual General Meeting saw President Paula Doucet, President and Maria Cormier, VP of Finance, both be acclaimed to their respective roles for a three-year term.
