Call for Nominations for the Nurse Managers and Supervisors Unit Representative

Please note that nominations are now open for the positions of Nurse Manager and Supervisor Unit Representative. Nominations must be received at Provincial Office no later than Tuesday, November 12, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. (You can send in the nomination form by email at
If more than one nomination is received, an election will be held for all members in good standing in the nurse manager and supervisor bargaining unit. We will then request that locals conduct elections during the week of November 18, 2019. More information about the election will be sent at a later date.

The successful candidate will commence duties immediately following the election.

Who is eligible for nomination?
To be eligible for nomination to the position of Nurse Manager and Supervisor Unit Representative, a member must be a dues paying member of a local in the Nurse Manager and Supervisor Bargaining Unit.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Member of the NBNU Board of Directors.
  • Chair of the Nurse Manager and Supervisor Negotiating Committee (current negotiations).
  • Chairperson of Nurse Manager and Supervisor Unit Representative meetings at the AGM and Executive Council meeting.
  • Present reports of your activities and issues concerning your bargaining unit to the Board of Directors, AGM and Executive Council.
  • Representing NBNU on external committees as requested by the NBNU Board of Directors.
  • Attend Labour Management meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities of Unit Representative(s) of NBNU
The role of the unit representative shall include, but is not limited to, the following:

General Responsibilities

  1. Carrying out the general objectives of the Union for all Union members, through active participation as a member of the board of directors, executive council, negotiation committee, and educational leave committee of respective bargaining unit;
    1. active participation includes, but is not limited to:
      1. reporting to the board of directors, executive council and annual general meeting, on all meetings, conferences and on their bargaining activities including but not limited to the educational leave committee, and negotiation committee, where applicable;
      2. representing the views of their bargaining unit at board of director, and executive council meetings;
      3. reporting to the board of directors any issues pertaining to their bargaining unit post discussion with the LRO;
      4. making themselves available, at the discretion of the president, to attend any pertinent meetings concerning their respective bargaining unit; and,
      5. engaging with membership at all NBNU meetings and/or functions.
      6. be accountable to the Board of Directors and full membership of NBNU, and not just their specific bargaining unit.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. act as the chairperson of the negotiation committee of respective bargaining unit;
  2. prepare reports for the Parasol/newsletters on the activities of their respective bargaining unit;
  3. be a voting delegate at all meetings of the Union
  4. be knowledgeable of the Constitution and By-Laws, all Union policies and the board of directors’ Code of Solidarity and Conduct;
  5. be knowledgeable of NBNU collective agreements; and
  6. be a signatory of the collective agreement for their respective bargaining unit.

Note: NBNU has three bargaining units: the part III, hospitals bargaining unit; the nurse managers/supervisors bargaining unit; and the nursing home bargaining unit. Unlike the other two bargaining units which have a single bargaining unit representative, the part III, hospital, bargaining has two representatives: a unit representative for hospitals and a unit representative for community care. The unit representative for hospitals shall be the chairperson of the negotiations committee for part III, and sit on the education committee. The unit representative for community care shall sit on the negotiations committee and the education committee.
